About howmuchtools.com

howmuchtools.com is a collection of free calculators built around one simple idea: real-world quantities should reflect real-world conditions, not textbook ideals. Whether you are grilling for ten guests, papering an old living room or working out how much sunscreen actually delivers the SPF on the bottle, our calculators give you the number that holds up when life gets in the way.

Why we built this

The idea started with a Sunday afternoon and two rolls of wallpaper too few. The math had been right on paper: square footage, roll length, simple division. The math forgot that walls have pattern repeats, that old plaster eats glue, and that the cuts at the corners are rarely reusable. Every DIY store within thirty kilometres was closed.

That kind of small disaster repeats itself in different forms. Three sausages short at a barbecue because the rule-of-thumb portion size came from a 1980s catering manual. A "two-week supply" of sunscreen that runs out on day nine because no one actually applies the labelled amount. A daily water target lifted from a generic eight-glasses-a-day rule that has nothing to do with body weight or activity level.

Every one of these problems has a better answer. It just is not the one most calculators online give you.

Our mission

We want to replace rules of thumb with numbers that take real life into account. That means accounting for buffers, pattern repeats, waste, body weight, temperature and the small variables that ideal-case math quietly ignores. A calculator is only useful if its result survives contact with reality.

How we calculate

Each calculator on this site is built from a documented methodology. We start with a baseline value from a reliable source – a manufacturer specification, a peer-reviewed study, an industry coverage figure or a recognised nutritional reference. We then adjust for the variables the baseline assumes away: substrate condition for paint, pattern repeat for wallpaper, hunger curve for barbecues, melt rate for ice, half-life for caffeine.

Where a buffer is added, we say so. Where a result is an estimate, we say so. Where the underlying number is debated in the field, we choose the more conservative figure rather than the one that flatters the calculator's apparent confidence.

What makes us different

Most quantity calculators online stop at the textbook formula. Surface area divided by coverage. Guests multiplied by a fixed portion. Litres of water per kilogram of body weight. The numbers look precise because they round cleanly, but they describe an ideal case that almost never occurs in practice.

Our calculators are built to be useful at the point of decision: when you are standing in the wallpaper aisle, packing a cooler for the weekend or deciding whether one more coffee at four in the afternoon is a good idea. The result is the amount that holds up at six in the evening – not the amount that holds up on paper.

Our principles

Who's behind howmuchtools

howmuchtools is a small independent project. It is not venture-funded, not part of a content network and does not try to be a lifestyle blog. The calculators are the product. Everything else on the site exists to make them clearer.

We fund the project through affiliate partnerships that are clearly marked wherever they appear. If you buy something through one of those marked links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is the only way we make money from the site, and we would rather state that plainly than disguise it.

Our promise to you

You will not find dark patterns here. No popups demanding your email before showing the result. No premium calculator hidden behind a wall. No fake urgency, no countdowns, no engagement tricks. The calculator loads, you type in your numbers, you get an answer that holds up. Then you close the tab.

That is the entire deal.
