How Much Power-Bank Capacity Does One Festival Phone Need?

Start with the number of full charges you want, not the number of festival days. A day of filming sets may drain your phone faster than a day when it stays in your pocket. Then read the battery capacity and nominal voltage for your own device. The calculator turns that demand into energy, allows for the conversion loss you enter, and turns the energy back into the mAh rating on a power bank. Think of the two mAh labels as cups with different sizes. Counting cups alone tells you little. Watt-hours (Wh) put both batteries on the same energy scale; charging loss is what spills while you pour from one to the other. For example, an illustrative 4,000 mAh device battery at 3.85 V stores 15.4 Wh. One full charge with an assumed 20% overall loss needs 19.25 Wh from the bank. At an assumed 3.7 V cell voltage, that is about 5,203 mAh of nominal power-bank capacity. Every voltage and loss in this example is an editable assumption, not a universal phone or power-bank specification. Why Can't You Match Device Battery mAh to Power-Bank mAh?

A 4,000 mAh phone battery does not necessarily take 4,000 mAh off a bank's printed rating. The two figures can be measured at different nominal voltages. To compare them, convert each to Wh using mAh ร— V รท 1,000. The FAA uses that same relationship to explain battery energy. Then allow for the energy lost in the bank's electronics, cable and the device's charging circuit. Anker describes these conversion stages in its rated-capacity guide. Merely subtracting your phone's mAh from the bank's mAh skips both the voltage difference and the transfer loss.

This is an energy estimate, not a promise that a real bank will deliver exactly that many charges. The table's loss setting is a single combined assumption. If your chosen bank has documented output performance, use it to test a better case and a worse case. Do not add another arbitrary loss percentage on top without knowing whether it is already included.

Which Voltage Should You Enter for a Power Bank?

Enter the nominal voltage tied to each battery's mAh rating: the device battery voltage for the device, and the bank's cell voltage for the bank. Do not copy the USB port's 5 V marking into the cell-voltage field just because that number is easiest to see. Anker's mAh-to-Wh guide makes this distinction explicit. How Much Conversion Loss Should You Use?

Use a figure supplied for your product and charging setup when you have one. Otherwise, treat the loss percentage as a scenario knob. Calculate once with your first assumption, then raise the loss and watch how much bank capacity you need. Anker's technical explanation separates the bank's voltage conversion from losses inside the device while it charges. Cable, charging method and temperature can also change delivery. That is why a single exact charge count is hard to promise from a box label.

This calculator uses one combined loss assumption from bank storage to replenished device battery. A bank's advertised output efficiency may cover only its own electronics, so check what a published percentage includes before entering it.

One Large Power Bank or Two Smaller Ones for a Festival?

Both arrangements can cover the same total Wh if their cell voltages and usable energy match. A single bank means one object to recharge and carry. Two banks let you lend one to a friend or keep one in a dry bag while the other is in use. Check total stored Wh, output ports, and how you will recharge the banks between days. A 20,000 mAh label on one product and two 10,000 mAh labels on others are comparable only after checking cell voltages and likely losses.

Festival Planning: How Many Full Charges Should You Count?

Build the charge count from your own phone habits. If you expect to leave the campsite with a full device and return with half a battery each night, two half-battery top-ups add up to roughly one full charge. If you film long sets, use maps between stages, or share your bank, enter more charges to reflect that demand. The calculator does not know your screen time or how often the site offers a working socket. State the amount of device energy you want it to replace.

For a second device, run the calculation again using that device's battery label. Add the required bank Wh from each run before converting back to the chosen bank's mAh. Four Power-Bank Sizing Mistakes to Avoid

Matching mAh labels directly. A phone's mAh and a bank's mAh may sit at different nominal voltages. Convert both to Wh first, then apply the loss you expect. The FAA formula shows how.

Using USB output voltage as cell voltage. A port label describes output, not necessarily the cells behind the printed mAh. Find the cell voltage in the bank's specifications, as Anker advises.

Counting festival days instead of charges. Days do not say how much your device drains. Estimate the full-battery equivalents you expect to replace, including partial top-ups, and enter that charge count.

Assuming every printed mAh reaches your device. Energy is lost during conversion and charging. Enter a loss assumption, compare scenarios, and round up to a real product capacity after checking its Wh rating.
